Here is a list of the 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Hungary (as of summer 2024)

1.Buda Castle District, Danube Panorama and Andrássy Street in Budapest (1987, expanded in 2002):

Includes the Buda Castle District, the Danube Panorama and Andrassy Street with Heroes’ Square and the Millennium Underground.

2.Historic Village of Hollokö and Surroundings (1987):
A traditional Hungarian village that has preserved its original structure and culture.

3.Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and the Slovak Karst (1995):
A cross-border area with impressive stalactite caves.

4.Pannonhalma Abbey and its natural surroundings (1996):
One of the oldest monastic complexes in Hungary, founded in 996.

5.Fertő / Lake Neusiedl Cultural Landscape (2001):
A cross-border cultural landscape between Austria and Hungary with winegrowing and diverse nature.

6.Tokaj Wine Cultural Landscape (2002):
A region with a long tradition of winegrowing and the production of the famous Tokaj wine.

7.Pecs Early Christian Cemetery (2000):
A 4th century necropolis with important early Christian frescoes.

8.Hortobagy Puszta (1999):
The Hortobágy Puszta is the largest natural grassland in Europe and an example of traditional land use and livestock farming in the Hungarian lowlands.

This means that Hungary has eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, representing both the country’s cultural and natural treasures.

The year in which the respective World Heritage site was added to the UNESCO list is shown in brackets in the list above. The first were Bundapest and Hollokő in 1987. The most recent is Tokaj, the wine region, in 2002. So no new World Heritage site has been designated in Hungary for over 20 years, neither a World Natural Heritage site nor a World Cultural Heritage site. However, there are some Hungarian candidates that could make it onto the World Heritage list in the next few years. Some proposals, such as the synagogues of Budapest, were also rejected.
