Located in eastern Hungary, Horthobagy National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique landscape, rich culture, history and diverse wildlife. Established in 1973 as Hungary’s first national park, it is one of the largest contiguous natural grasslands (“pusta”) in Europe. The vast plains have a unique charm, with panoramic views, traditional pastoral culture and an abundance of flora and fauna. If you want to truly experience Hungary’s natural and cultural heritage, Horthobagy National Park is a must-see.

How to get to Hortobagy National Park

By plane: The nearest airport is in Debrecen, about 45 kilometers from Hortobagy. Debrecen International Airport has direct flights from many European cities. From Debrecen, you can reach the park by car or public transportation.

By train: Hungary’s railway network is well developed, and you can take a train from Budapest to Hortobagy to the national park. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. From the city, you can take local buses or taxis to reach many of the park’s attractions.

By car: From Budapest, take the M3 motorway towards Debrecen and follow the signs to Hortobagy. The journey time is about two and a half hours.

Things to do in Hortobagy National Park

Nine-Arch Bridge of Hortobagy (Kilenclyukú híd): This iconic bridge is one of Hungary’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in the 19th century, it spans the Hortobagy River and is the longest stone bridge in the country. You can take great photos from the bridge.

Hortobagy Shepherds’ Museum (Pásztormúzeum): Located near the Nine-Arch Bridge, this museum offers a glimpse into the traditional life of Hungarian shepherds (csikós). On display are tools, clothing and artifacts used by the shepherds over the centuries. It is well worth a visit.

Puszta Plain: The actual national park. Visitors can explore the area on foot, by bike or as part of a guided tour. Also very popular for birds and bird watching.

Hortobagy Zoo: This zoo features species native to the region, including Hungarian grey cattle and water buffalo.

Ponds: This is all about birds and bird watching. Especially many species of migratory birds in spring and autumn. You can explore the area on foot or by boat tour.

Traditional horse show: Experience the skills of the Csikós (Hungarian riders) at an exciting horse show, which features traditional horse riding and acrobatics on horseback. For many visitors to the national park, this is the highlight of the visit.

Hiking and cycling: The park has several well-signposted hiking and cycling trails

Food and drink: Pancakes with paprika sauce are a local specialty. Together with a glass of Hungarian wine, this is an authentic culinary experience. Goulash is also offered and ordered in many places.

Guided tour: Take a guided tour, especially if you are interested in the history and wildlife of the park.
